Ian Garner
Assistant Professor, Pilecki Institute Warsaw
Dr. Ian Garner is currently Assistant Professor at the Centre for Totalitarian Studies at the Pilecki Institute, Warsaw. He is a specialist in Russian and Soviet military culture and propaganda. He is the author of two books, Stalingrad Lives: Stories of Combat & Survival (McGill-Queen’s UP, 2022) and Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia’s Fascist Youth (Hurst/Oxford UP, 2023), which has been translated into five languages and the subject of media attention around the world. His new book project, Killing for the Motherland, explores the intersection of media and subjectivity in the experiences of marginalized people(s) who have fought for Russia since 1914.
Dr. Garner received his PhD from the Slavic Department at the University of Toronto (Canada) in 2017, where he wrote his dissertation on the myth of the Battle of Stalingrad. Before coming to the Pilecki Institute, he taught at the University of Toronto and Queen's University, Ontario. He remains a fellow at the Centre for International & Defence Policy and regularly comments and writes for major media outlets in both Europe and North America.
