Dr. Stéphanie Martel

Director, Centre for International & Defence Policy

Stéphanie Martel is an Assistant Professor of Political Studies at Queen’s University. Her research is on multilateral diplomacy, security regionalism, and the role of narratives in the social construction of world politics, with a focus on Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific. Her recently published monograph titled Enacting the Security Community: ASEAN's Never-Ending Story (Stanford University Press, 2022) illuminates the central role of discourse in the making of security communities through a case study of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Dr. Martel's work is also featured in International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of International Relations, International Affairs, International Studies Perspectives, and The Pacific Review, among others.

Dr. Martel is a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and a member of the Réseau d'analyse stratégique/Network for Strategic Analysis. She serves as a Canadian representative to the ASEAN Regional Forum’s Experts and Eminent Persons Group, and participates in a number of informal diplomacy and policy dialogues on Asia-Pacific affairs. Prior to joining Queen’s, Dr. Martel was a FRQSC Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia’s Institute of Asian Research and the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies (McGill University), and has held visiting research positions at Chulalongkorn University, the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (Jakarta), and the Asian Center at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.
