Kristen Csenkey

PhD, Balsillie School of International Affaires

Kristen Csenkey is a PhD (ABD) at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She is also a Fellow with the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN) and the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI). Kristen’s research focuses on cyber governance and understanding the global security entanglements of emerging technologies. She publishes widely on these topics, with special attention to knowledge mobilization activities and policy applicability. Kristen’s emerging research focuses on the governance of specific disruptive technologies through standardization policy and international cooperation on regulation. Kristen is also involved in the Quantum Ethics Project (QEP) where she collaborates with a multi-disciplinary research team to understand the social, environmental, political, and economic implications of quantum technology. Kristen’s research contributions are recognized through numerous awards, accolades, and scholarships. Kristen was the recipient of the 2020 Women in Defence and Security Canada (WiDS)–CGAI Fellowship Award and was acknowledged as an Emerging Thought Leader in Digital Security by Women in International Security Canada (WIIS-C) in 2020. Often called to give expert advice to various federal government departments and parliamentary committees in Canada, Kristen also frequently appears on national TV and radio, including on CBC News and CTV, and CBC Radio. Kristen’s work is featured in iPolitics and her many opinion pieces can be found in The Hill Times. Her academic work can be found in the Journal of Cybersecurity and the Canadian Naval Review. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator of three Department of National Defence-funded research projects, focusing on the topics of quantum computing, connected technologies in the Canadian aviation ecosystem, and cyber-resilient electric vehicles.
